New Resident's Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I live in Swedesboro?

A: While your Post Office is in Swedesboro, you live in Woolwich Township. Swedesboro separated from Woolwich Township in 1902. While Woolwich Township and Swedesboro have a longstanding partnership and share many services, they are separate municipalities. [Your mail should be addressed to "Woolwich Twp., NJ 08085"]

Q; Where are the nearest libraries?

A; Nearby branches of the Gloucester County Library are at Beckett Road and Center Square Road in Logan Township, and on Kings Highway in Swedesboro. The GCL Main Branch is in Mullica Hill on Rt. 45, ˝ mile north of Rt. 322.

Q: Where is Motor Vehicle Services?

A: A Motor Vehicle Service Center is located at Exit 20 of Rt. 295, just west of the overpass.

Q: Why are taxes increasing so much?

A: While our local school enrollments have grown by over 500 students over the last few years, the State’s aid to our schools has remained nearly flat. This effectively means that these newer students are not receiving any state educational aid at all, and local taxpayers have to carry the entire cost of their education. To make matters worse, districts with shrinking enrollments (like Camden and Newark) are still receiving the same funding they received years ago, in effect providing them with a windfall of additional state aid. Many of Woolwich’s newer residents have moved here from other New Jersey municipalities, but the state educational aid they fund through income and sales taxes is still going to their prior school district.

Q: Why is Woolwich Township growing so fast?

A: Woolwich Township is ideally located for families seeking a rural atmosphere with easy access to major highways and commercial centers. While it is natural for people to say "stop building new homes" (especially now that they have had the chance to move in!), many of the developments in Woolwich have been in the planning and approval cycle for decades. The current demographics of the Delaware Valley, coupled with a good economy, are combining to drastically increase new housing demands.

The recent growth has catapulted Woolwich’s median income by 59% over the last decade, to become the highest in Gloucester County, and ahead of South Jersey’s traditionally high-income areas such as Moorestown, Medford, Medford Lakes, Mt. Laurel, and Cherry Hill.

Q: What special events are held in the area?

A: Swedesboro-Woolwich Parks and Recreation holds many special events, including Easter Egg hunts, bowling and skating parties, Movie Nights in the summer, and a Halloween fun day. Watch the Newtown Press for announcements. Swedesboro-Woolwich day in the fall is also a fun event, with crafts, games for kids, and shows provided up and down Kings Highway in Swedesboro. The Christmas parade is held the Saturday after Thanksgiving on Kings Highway. Saint Alfio day is usually celebrated in May with fireworks along Center Square Road.

Q: Where are playgrounds?

A: Playgrounds are available at Locke Avenue Park, Lake Park (East Avenue and Park Avenue in Swedesboro), and at the Walter Hill, Stratton, and Clifford Schools. Locke Avenue Park also has baseball fields and soccer fields, and a jogging/walking path. Lake Park includes a nature trail along Lake Narraticon, and fresh-water fishing (with the appropriate state license).

Q: Where is the Fire Department?

A: The Woolwich Fire Department operates fire trucks and various rescue equipment. The main fire station is located where Auburn Road and Kings Highway meet in Swedesboro. This fire department is shared and jointly funded by Woolwich and Swedesboro. Volunteers staff the fire department, so if you would like to join or would just like check out the equipment, stop by the fire station.

Q: How can I get more involved in the community?

A: A growing community like Woolwich has endless opportunities for its residents to get involved and improve our Township. The organizers of youth sports teams are always looking for volunteers to assist in special events and coaching. The area Scouting programs are also always ready to accept more help. The Fire Department is always on the lookout for dedicated volunteers.

If you would like to get more involved politically, please attend a Woolwich Township Republican Club meeting and meet the leaders of your community on an informal basis. Send an email for more information.
